Schedule

  • Day 1

    Students arrive into Trujillo and are picked up by MOCHE staff at the airport or bus station. Lodging and meals begin on this day and students are allowed time to adjust to Peru, call home and explore Huanchaco at their own pace. General safety and logistical information will be provided upon arrival. Be sure to send your itinerary to MOCHE staff before departing the US.

  • Day 2

    Formal orientation begins in the morning (including safety, a general introduction to Peruvian pre-history, geography and logistics), followed by a tour of Huanchaco and Trujillo in the afternoon.
    Breakfast, hot lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 3

    Half-day tour of the excavation sites and introduction to the middle valley MOCHE archaeological community reserves.
    Breakfast, pack lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 4

    Rest day

  • Day 5-9

    Laboratory work begins!
    Laboratory introduction and workshops on protocol and database management
    Breakfast, pack lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 10

    Site tour – Huaca de la Luna and Huaca del Sol
    Breakfast, pack lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 11

    Rest day

  • Day 12-16

    Lab work continues!
    Breakfast, pack lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 17

    Site tour – Chan Chan
    Breakfast, pack lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 18

    Rest day

  • Day 19-23

    Lab work continues!
    Breakfast, pack lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 24

    Final day of work. Students assist in packing up the remains and lab equipment and finalize analysis and curation.
    Breakfast, pack lunch and full dinner are provided.

  • Day 25

    Students depart from Trujillo. MOCHE staff will arrange for transportation to the bus station or airport as necessary.
    Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Daily Expectations 

On work days we typically provide breakfast between 6:30 and 7:30 am. Work will begin work at 8:00 am. We will take a lunch break about 12:30 and will end the day about 5:00. Students will have free time until dinner, which is typically served around 7:00pm.

Breakfast on Saturday is typically served around 8:30am and the local site tour is over by early afternoon. Afternoons on Saturdays are free-time in Huanchaco.

There is no schedule on Sundays. There will also be no food provided as this is the day off for our Peruvian staff. MOCHE staff can make recommendations in Huanchaco for safe, local cuisine.
